Professional Context for Observational Drawings

Yesterday I tried a new element in the Observational Drawing critique.  I asked students look at their Week 10 drawings and determine a professional use for the drawings.  This gave the students a professional mindset that made it easier for them to discuss the work in professional terms and use the design fundamentals and observational drawing vocabulary we have been practicing.  In the first critique they had to apply one term from the glossary to an assigned homework drawing so they were warmed up for close observation.  Students instantly responded to the challenge to do professional analysis in a group and determine a theme or title for a professional context for the work.  The professional use challenge is a continuation of focusing on the strengths in each work.  I am going to replace the inquisition activity with this one.  It's a winner.

Some of the students chose to draw still life subjects and some decided to draw portraits of each other.  This self-determined subject was also a motivation in the room.

This after-drawing activity lead to engagement and serious conversation between the students.

The task is for students to think of a professional use for the drawings, give them at title, and explain what about the drawing lead them to the title and the professional application.
