Basho and Haikai Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) was one of the most famous poets in Edo period. He defined “haikai spirit” as following: first of all, haikai spirit implied the interaction of diverse languages and subcultures, particularly between the new popular culture and the poetic tradition, and the humor and interest resulting from the sociolinguistic incongruity or difference between the two. Second, haikai spirit meant taking pleasure in recontextualization: defamiliarization, dislocating habitual, conventionalized perceptions, and their refamiliarization, recasting established poetic topics into contemporary language and culture, the haikai spirit was also marked by a constant search for novelty and new perspectives. Finally, the haikai imagination implied the ability to interact in a playful, lively dialogue that produced communal art.
Today I'm working making some non-figurative haiga for the Austin Figurative Gallery Abstract Figures show.

| Hidden Haiga |
[Mar. 28th, 2008|11:36 pm] |
I feel related to Yosa Buson poet painter. I was reading my haiku book and found reference to haiga.
Haiga is haiku painting. Hai refers to the poem or haiku and ga means painting. The form originated in seventeenth-century Japan and was used to decorate scrolls, albums, screens, and fans. You always find three elements in haiga: an ink-brush or watercolor painting, a poem or poems, and calligraphy. The form is characterized by a fresh and spontaneous rendering of ordinary, everyday life--very much in the haiku spirit--as well as by simple subjects, loose and fluid brushstrokes, and plenty of white space. It is usually very sketch-like with spare images expressed with just a few lines, little detail, and one or two colors for added visual interest.
OK I'm on it!

| Japanese Death Poems |
[Jan. 16th, 2008|04:43 pm] |
Haiku at death's door samuri and monk's final poetic surprise
Writing haiku lately has been comforting as family deaths bring sadness and reflections, so I decided to teach myself more about haiku. At the bookstore last night I found an amazing book about a practice I had no idea existed, the practice of writing a death poem as you die or shortly before. Japanese Death poems written by Zen monks and Haiku Poets on the verge of death, compiled by Yoel Hoffman, talks about poetic forms as well as the cultural attitudes toward both death and poetry over centuries. I can hardly put the book down with it's focus on creativity at end of life moments. It has hundreds of death poems with short descriptions about the author telling the story of the poet's death. |
