Guy Kawasaki points to Kotler for the Single Slide Marketing 3.0. Kawasaki believes in the 10-slide pitch and I totally agree with his argument that clean and clear high-level introduction to the team and it's magic is the best first step to get to the second meeting. Kawasaki's pitch theory goes with the Presentation Zen and Beyond Bullet Points philosophy too. I love to teach these methods when remaking text-heavy PPTs for training.

Agenda for a meeting about a non-existent logo, slogan, and title.
flip chart agenda for a meeting about nothing A meeting about nothing.
Is nothing happening on your project?
What’s stopping the creative energy in your organization?
Is there a non-productive lull in your team?

What is the nothing that’s getting in the way?
Honoria Starbuck will facilitate a generative meeting around and about and over that nothing.

Description:
An active creative environment in which participants creatively organize and reorganize team goals and project concepts using visual thinking, play, emergent design and principles of adult learning.
The creative class of Austin at work.
Based on my experience facilitating the activity at the City of Austin Comprehensive Plan VizThink meeting, this is a perfect service for me to
develop.
I'm on it!

Making PPT right now to serve as case study.

VizThink Austin December Meeting

graphic recording of vizthink Austin December 2008 meeting
At the recent VizThink Austin meeting Sunni gave an interactive preview of a presentation she was scheduled to give to a new and large group.  She was nervous.  We worked in small teams to illustrate/graphic record one situation from our group.  Our group's problem was about a recently laid-off researcher who wanted to become a teacher. All during the presentation we gave advice for tweaking it and reflected on optimizations at the end.  I'm sure Sunni did a great presentation to her clients and everyone at the meeting learned from Sunni and from each other..

graphic recording of dream charting lecture

Last night's VizThink Austin group featured a lecture and demonstration of dream charting by Dillon Robinson. I took notes in pencil and experimented with the Mentler-inspired boxy stick figures not thinking about using the notes on the web but Marilyn wanted me to send them to put on the VizThink web site. Next time I'll use softer/darker pencils to take notes with. My favorite part is the rapid eye movement doodle.

Austin's graphic recording of the meeting
Graphic Recording by Austin VIZTHINK AUSTIN Meeting 9-9-08: the Gallery Walk by poet, Austin Kleon

"Honoria Starbuck showed her graphic recording and 1-minute life-drawings. I don't remember the context of this quote about graphic recording, but I liked it: 'finding haikus in conversation.' She also gave me a ride home..." The meeting was a round robbin of presentations of creative products. When it got to me, the room had been filled with words about visual language; I said I didn't have anything to say but invited everyone to gather around and flip through my book of SXSW 2008 Haiga : Live Art Blogging and my book of practice graphic recordings. I also stuck in a few of my favorite small format life drawings. Within this VizThink context I rediscovered my intense fondness for life drawing was overcoming my practical nature for creating graphic recordings.

I was asked some questions and answered them so here I am preaching to the choir on visual language and creativity. Also my new Rodin Watercolors and Drawings book had something to do with this passionate response. Austin presented poetry at the meeting. Eric had some paintings. It was refreshing to add elements that had little to do with graphic recording and especially with its connection to business. Eric came up to me and we talked about quick painting styles and what fun it is. Austin lives in my neighborhood and I gave him a lift home.

Berlin or bust

When I went to the VizThink site to sign up for the newsletter I saw a call for sessions for VizThink Europe 08 in Berlin.  As a curriculum designer I came up with these two and submitted them.  We'll see.
Color theory for graphic facilitation
Bring all your art supplies to this one! Hands-on color theory will introduce participants to classic color combinations based on the traditional paint color wheel.  Interactive problem-solving will get the group learning what combinations can be used to balance and energize a whole graphic recording composition.  Example graphic recordings (including volunteered participant examples) will be analyzed by the class to determine color relationships and color themes that work and determine what alternative options can be used effectively.

Composition lessons from art history
Graphic recordings are traditionally done in a large and long landscape format.  What compositional systems work best for this layout?  Participants will take away lots of new ideas from the great muralists and frieze artists of the past. In a hands-on activity, participants will create contemporary business-appropriate compositions by applying patterns from art history.
Wouldn't these be fun sessions?  I am inspired by the fascinating presentation at SXSW Interactive by Jennifer Fraser about what interface designers can learn from Ancient Rome.

Stealth Graphic Recordings -> early results

I sent this request out to a group of professional facilitators affiliated with the CoGG.

I am developing my graphic recording skills by attending meetings and presentations and creating small format (sketchbook) graphic recordings.

If you have a meeting or function in which I can create some small-format stealth graphic recordings I'd love to hear about it. I will offer digital copies of the resulting drawings to the presenter or sponsor. I'm especially interested in creating whole books of conferences such as my Live Art Blogging at SXSW 2008.

I've been tweaking my new graphic recording web site at honoriastarbuck.com:-) Feedback welcome.

ACTION

I attended a facilitated brainstorm last month. The facilitator gave me a rave review on her blog. http://3lastnames.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/06/killer-meeting-documentation.html

I applied for a free trip to Berlin to do a graphic book (like the Live Art Blogging SXSW book) of the VizThink Europe Conference in October.
Update: It isn't a free trip, rather a referral credit system. If you go to the conference tell them you read about it here and I'll get credit in Euros toward the conference.

I'm going to do a stealth recording and network the business at the Women's Chamber on Friday.

I'm taking a VizThink certification workshop on July 18th.

Another facilitator from the group wants me to attend 2 meetings in August as part of my self-apprenticeship program.

I'm writing a blog post about composition (fine art) in the field of graphic recording to do some web 2.Ohing

That's the news from http://honoriastarbuck.com
whee!
