I'm reading Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird some instructions on writing and life and laughing. Here's some advice that reads like model plane flying:
…the first draft is the down draft -- you just get it down. The second draft is the up draft -- you fix it up. You try to say what you have to say accurately. And the third draft is the dental draft where you check every tooth…p. 25-26.

I'm working chapter by chapter on the down draft, or as Bolker calls it, the "zero draft." Melanie said she'd translate my French interviews and I will send them to her today.
