life drawing word of the day

écorché - A figure drawn, painted, or sculpted to show the muscles of the body without skin. The Renaissance architect and theorist, Leon Battista Alberti (Italian, 1404-1472), recommended that when a painter is going to depict a nude, he should first arrange the muscles and bones, then pick out a nice skin to go with them. My students are doing muscle drawings. They are really improving in their seeing as well as their drawing. Life drawing is a strange combination of copying static anatomy illustrations and drawing from live models. Life drawing involves many skills and muscles on the artist's side and the same on the model's side. It's refreshing to watch beginners start to get into the rhythm of drawing from life.
