Speedy mail art

Mail artists either play with the speed of the Internet and are in favor of digital communication, or regret the speed and treasure the leisurely pace of the mail. Digital artists collapse traditional lags in the mail art process thriving on spontaneous choices and quick responses. Traditional mail artist stretch out time and distance in a contemplative correspon(dance) in which creating evolves slowly and with consideration. It is the difference between the jitterbug and the tango--both sexy communications between the participants and to the viewers. Any conflict over speed is relative and temporary, of course, because the whole mess is getting faster--all information goes speedier--when will the post office no longer be paper-based, or no longer an institution at all.
Spontaneous choices, contemplative spaces.
