Here are the instructions for the Hercules Homework project for Gesture Drawing.  I'm always surprised how creative students can be when interpreting this myth.

Hercules Myth Project
Your homework is to create 2 drawings that illustrate one of the Labors of Hercules each week.
You may research the labors through art history and anywhere else. Use this website for quick reference.

A total of two 20-minute drawings and 6 thumbnails are due each week.
Each week from week 2 through week 10 illustrate two aspects of one Labor of Hercules .
  • Draw 3 quick gestures of possible compositions for each idea for a total of ten 1-2 minute gesture sketches or thumbnails.
  • Develop two 20-minute drawing from your quick sketches.
Bring all 6 quick sketches and 2 panels to each class.

Two 14x17 inch (or larger) 20-minute drawings and their thumbnail planning drawings are due at the beginning of each class.

Your illustrations will evolve and your drawing skills will improve, so don’t try to achieve continuity from first to last drawing. Enjoy and value learning, experimenting, changing and improving throughout the project. The panels at the end of the semester should reflect your cumulative learning of the course content.
