This amzaing painting by one of my students ignores all the guidelines we were learning in observational drawing.
Hurray for ignoring guidelines and choosing adventure in unexplored dimensions.
It's hard to tell in this photo but the texture around the red ramp shape gives richness and depth and contrasts with the two bright red facets of the central form.
The piece is 18x24 inches in graphte and watercolor.
The student never used any color medium in the class before.
Our direction has been to work out observational drawing techniques to achieve a sense of space and realism, but really expression trumps realism in most outstanding student work.
